CMP RIFLE
Our year-round CMP-style shooting matches are designed to test your skills with military-style rifles. Each month’s match commemorates an historical event from our country’s history, and salutes the men and women who have served. Eye & ear protection is required at all times by both participants & observers.
You may shoot any military rifle with open sights, but to qualify for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place “bragging rights,” you must shoot a rifle which matches the theme of that month’s event.
Shooting is done at 100 yards using reduced targets that simulate 200, 300, and 600 yards.
We shoot 3 positions:
- offhand (standing) – no sling
- sitting – with sling
- prone – with sling
In 4 separate segments:
- 10 minutes: offhand – 2 sighters, 10 shots for score, single load
- 60 seconds: sitting rapid – 2 sighters, 10 shots for score, magazine change
- 70 seconds: prone rapid – 2 sighters, 10 shots for score, magazine change
- 20 minutes: prone slow – 2 sighters, 20 shots for score, single load
WHAT TO BRING
- Eye protection
- Ear protection
- Military rifle with open sights
- Sling, if you have one
- Empty chamber flag (we have extras)
- 2 clips or magazines for rapid fire
- 58 rounds of ammo, minimum
- Spotting scope and shooting mat (we usually have extras to borrow)
Adults are $5
Juniors shoot free and are strongly encouraged to attend! Juniors must be accompanied by an adult.

Registration: 12:00 p.m.
Safety briefing and shooting starts: 12:30 p.m.
Duration: 3-4 hours
Usually the 3rd Sunday of each month, with exceptions based on other SLCFSA events. Please check the SLCFSA calendar.

SCORING
Participants score their own targets on a score sheet provided: total possible points are 500.
We do not post scores and do not include them in the SLCFSA newsletter, as we feel it may intimidate newer shooters. The CMP goal is to teach and assist with shooting skills so that participants can have more enjoyment and reach their personal best, whatever that number may be!
